On January 11, 2013, Howard County Police Officer Cpl. Craig Ream, a member of the HCPD tactical team, was on his way to the police station at about 3 a.m. The officer came upon the scene of a serious car accident on Route 97 involving two vehicles. One vehicle was down an embankment, upside down, and on fire, according to The Baltimore Sun.

Cpl. Ream crawled under the hood of the car to the windshield area where he saw a small opening. He squeezed his way through the opening into the car and found a teenage girl trapped inside. The officer grabbed the girl and crawled back through the hole, dragging her with him. He then dragged her up the hill and away from the burning car. The teen was flown to Shock Trauma. Police Chief William McMahon described Cpl. Ream as a “hero” for his actions in this car accident.
